she has her lip pierced with a little silver hoop that shivers lopsided, and she has smudged eyeliner around her jane doe eyes.
her backpack is the pattern of speckled cosmos, and inside is her first package of heroin (white and persisting its innocence), and she remembered the first time he told her that, she could be her own drug, she didn't need anybody but herself. she was immortal.

he had thick black eyelashes and his shoulders carried too much already, she didn't know that he himself spent his sleepless nights counting the glowing green stickers on his bedroom wall, one, two, three, four…

they thought they loved each other, and with every ounce of blood coursing through their muffled veins, they swore to love each other even when they weren't injecting each other with the dirty needles (filthy with lust and grunge like vulgar splotches of mildew on a weary apartment wall) of heroin.

maybe in some way they were right, in some way we didn't understand they were in love. but their parents didn't believe the meek dots on their arms red with last night's high, or the musty and sweaty smell of their palms damp with regret.

they were drunk with each other's infatuation and they were stumbling across the tiled floor of her mother's apartment, (room 45 with the cross nailed upside-down on the front of the door). his vision was ecstasy, tangerine trees and periwinkle planets, and from the corner of his eye she was plummeting farther and farther down the rabbit hole, (and it wasn't kind; it was darkness and rainy pavements on a monday morning.)

she had been hit with a realization like a wet washcloth, i don't want to die and before she could say, i'm sorry her eyelids bolted shut with no key in sight.

druggies or lovers?
